Pillar wax
A firmer wax blend formulated to hold its shape at room temperature, used for freestanding pillar and taper candles.
Pillar wax is a firmer wax blend designed to hold its own shape at room temperature once it is removed from a mold, rather than needing the support of a jar or tin. Paraffin pillar blends and beeswax are both common choices for freestanding candles like pillars and tapers.
Firmness matters for pillar wax because a candle that is too soft will slump, bend, or lose its shape as room temperature rises, especially in a taper that is thin and unsupported along most of its length. Pillar wax is often formulated or blended with additives to raise hardness and improve how cleanly it releases from a mold.
When choosing a pillar wax, check that it is rated for molded, freestanding candles rather than container use, since the two are not interchangeable. A common mistake is using a soft container wax in a pillar mold expecting it to hold its shape once unmolded, which usually results in a candle that sags or will not release cleanly.
