Wick size

Wick size refers to matching a wick's diameter and construction to a candle's container width, wax type, and fragrance load. A wick that works well in a narrow tin will usually be undersized for a wide jar, and a change in wax or fragrance oil can shift which wick size performs best even in the same container.

Choosing the right wick size affects almost every visible burn quality a candle has. A wick that is too small produces a shallow melt pool and tunnels down the middle, leaving unused wax on the sides. A wick that is too large creates an oversized flame, excess soot, mushrooming at the tip, and a container that can overheat. Wick size is one of the first things to check when troubleshooting an uneven or smoky burn.

Wick sample packs that include several diameters and materials make it practical to test burn a new container or wax before committing to a full batch. A common mistake is assuming one wick size will suit every project. Wick size should be re-tested any time the wax, fragrance load, or container changes.
