Most candle faults are wick faults in disguise, so the first thing to buy when a candle burns badly is a range of wick sizes rather than an additive. A tunnel that leaves wax on the glass, a mushrooming tip, a flame drowning in its own pool: all three are usually a wick series or diameter mismatched to the vessel, and a sample kit spanning several series in one pack lets you burn the same wax and jar against four or five candidates instead of guessing one at a time. Once the wick is settled, additives have a real job. A polymer modifier improves fragrance retention and hardness, and the grade matters because one version is formulated for pillars and moulds while another is meant for containers at a lower dose, usually a small single digit percentage of wax weight. A stearic acid hardener raises melting point and opacity, which cures a pillar that slumps in a warm room but will crack a container blend if overdone. Fading and yellowing are a light problem rather than a wax problem, and a stabiliser dosed by weight handles vessels that sit in a window. None of it helps without records, which is why a burn log with columns for wick, dose, ambient temperature and melt pool is the item that turns a repeating fault into a solved one.
